A complete transformation, from beginning to end.

Holmead Place NW, Columbia Heights

This house is one of 3DG’s most exciting development projects to date. We oversaw the process from beginning to end, transforming a dowdy, cramped row house into a light-filled, contemporary home like no other on the market.

The house, without a sleeping porch or addition, is smaller than most Columbia Heights row homes. 3DG architects and designers were challenged with opening up the existing space in new ways without adding to the house.

To make the most of the space on the first floor, 3DG removed the bay window in the back and rebuilt it with floor to ceiling glass windows that extend up to the second floor. They also built a new staircase with open risers that opens to the first floor, and added wood-paneled, built-in bookshelves behind the stairs and flanking the mechanical shafts. To continue this airy look, the kitchen was opened into the dining room.

Prior to the renovation, there were three bedrooms on the second floor. Our architects decided the best way to maximize space was to eliminate a bedroom and create a master suite with an en suite bath, a second bedroom, and a separate bathroom. The result is a clean layout with two bedrooms that are separated by new closets for sound dampening, plus a bathroom and a laundry room accessible from the hall.

3DG outfitted the interiors with high-quality materials. Dark floors contrast with custom maple millwork. The shower features cashmere slate. Though the spaces aren’t large, they are purposeful. And beautiful.
