A typical three bedroom row house on an unusually large lot this house had not been updated since the 60s when the kitchen had been remodeled. It had been neglected and over the years had lost its original charm. This was a development project for 3DG and we decided to do something entirely new.
Adding a story to the house gave it a true master suite with private balcony, something adding on in the back could not do. Also, this allowed us to preserve a nice deep backyard. The sagging bay window in the rear was replaced with a brighter and glassier one bringing light into the back of the house. A new reading nook was incorporated into the front bay on the second floor where two large bedrooms were created along with ample storage and a large laundry room. All of the walls were removed on the first floor and the kitchen cabinets stretch along the party wall transforming into bookshelves in the living room. A low screen wall was used to cradle the eating area in the larger open space. The basement was finished and large double doors were added in the back providing an abundance of light to the space.
The use of clerestories throughout the house allows the eye to extend beyond the confines of the room and allows natural light to bounce from space to space. 3DG breathed new life into a once cramped home creating light, open spaces, and extended views.
